September 30, 2004 Merck & Co announced that the arthritis drug Vioxx, used by millions of people around the world, is being pulled off the market after a study confirmed long-standing concerns that it raises the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Approved by the FDA in 1999 as a painkilling medication, millions of doses of Vioxx have been dispensed to people just like you at a much higher cost than available drugs and with no significant improvement in results.
Health concerns began to surface regarding Vioxx as early as June, 2001 when a study published in a prominent medical journal suggested the drug might cause kidney damage. Since then several other studies have raised concerns about cardiovascular health risks; however the manufacturer dismissed these studies as inconclusive and continued aggressively marketing the drug. During the first 6 months of 2004 Merck spent more than $45 million on advertising for Vioxx.
