Vioxx Alternatives

If you have been taking the recently recalled drug Vioxx here are some alternatives to consider, and their pros and cons.  As always, before you switch medications, you should consult with your doctor to make sure that the alternatives will not interfere with any medical conditions you have or other medications you take.

Aspirin

Research has indicated that aspirin decreases the risk of heart attack and can reduce colon polyps. However, long-term use can cause ulcers, internal bleeding and in rare cases death.

Ibuprofen

Commonly known by its trade names Advil and Motrin, it is used for muscle pain and menstrual cramps. Using it for a prolonged period of time can lead to ulcers and internal bleeding.

Naproxen

Know as Advil and Naprosyn. Naproxen can help protect the heart while relieving pain. The side effects usually include ulcers, internal bleeding and in rare cases, death.

Celebrex

The FDA has not been convinced by the manufacturer, Pfizer, that this COX-@ inhibitor is gentler on the stomach than other alternatives. So far there have been no signs of heart trouble, hypertension of selling, however many medical experts are nevertheless concerned about potential risks*.

Bextra

This is another COX-@ inhibitor. When taken in the recommended doses it has not shown any signs of increased cardiovascular risk, however many medical experts are nevertheless being cautious*. Higher than recommended doses may cause hypertension and swelling.

* According to many medical experts, the entire class of Cox-2 inhibitors has never been shown to be significantly more effective than traditional NSAIDs, such as naproxen and ibuprofen, yet it has significantly higher risks for serous side effects. For patients concerned about gastrointestinal safety, medications are available to lower their risk of stomach problems.
